Please note that students will not be scheduled or assigned a teacher for next year without an approved Choice Request on file. Submit your request here: https://eds.ospi.k12.wa.us/ChoiceTransferRequest Students Shine at WA State Future Problem Solving Competition Two students, Alec Tran and Ben Dobbin, from Michael Anderson Elementary recently represented Medical Lake SD at the Washington State Future Problem Solving competition in Stanwood, WA at Warm Beach Camp. They participated in the MAGIC (Multi-Affiliate Global Issues Competition), collaborating with students from other schools to form a four-member team. The MAGIC competition follows the six-step Future Problem Solving process, with a unique twist: teams work through a streamlined version that includes identifying key challenges and developing eight problems and eight corresponding solutions. Alec’s team earned third place! In addition to their hard work during the competition, students enjoyed exploring the beautiful surroundings of western Washington, including a memorable hike to a nearby estuary. It was a valuable experience that combined academic challenge, teamwork, and outdoor exploration. Farm to School Our very first Farm to School event is on May 1st. To launch the initiative, students will be offered a Baked Potato Bar with all the fixings for lunch. Local farms will be providing many of the ingredients! Here is a slide deck that will run in each cafeteria to help promote this amazing new partnership. Take Me Out To The Ball Game! Hallett and Michael Anderson 4th and 5th-graders were treated to a Spokane Indians game on Tuesday, April 14th, as part of the Spokane Indian's Education Days. Monday Minute 3.23.2026
Monday Minute March 23, 2026 Investing in Excellence: A Recap of Our Learning Improvement Day Last Friday, March 20, our schools were closed to students, but our buildings were buzzing with activity and professional learning. Staff members from all schools gathered at Michael Anderson Elementary in the morning and returned to their respective schools in the afternoon. Learning Improvement Days are a vital time for our educators to grow, collaborate, and find new ways to support your children. What Our Staff Accomplished Vertical Teaming: Educators met in grade-level and subject-specific groups to ensure talk about the alignment of learning from one grade level or course to the next. Supporting Student & Staff Well-being: Our Wellness Team and school counselors engaged in deep learning about secondary trauma to better understand how it affects those who experience or witness it. Military Community Connection: Staff members join the Operations Officer for the 92nd Force Support Squadron to gain firsthand insight into the unique experiences of our military-connected families. They walked-through an aircraft hangar and learned about the pre-deployment process, where military members prepare for deployment. Understanding the realities of deployment allows us to be a stronger support system for our students when a parent is away. Building District Pride: In our #Proud2bMLSD session, staff brainstormed ways to strengthen our district culture, ensuring that every student and staff member feels a deep sense of belonging and pride in being part of the Medical Lake family - from preschool until walk across the graduation stage! What Our Staff Shared - What was your most valuable takeaway from LID? “It was incredibly impactful to be guided by a member of the Air Force who shared his perspective on working with military families. Gaining insight into the unique challenges Air Force kids face—and the types of support that help them thrive—was both eye opening and meaningful. I left feeling inspired, more informed, and excited to support military families and students…” “It was so impactful to have quality time with our teams across the district. Building relationships between us makes us better educators as we have more people to lean on. This, in turn, benefits our students, which is the ultimate goal.” “I appreciated the opportunity to connect and have discussions with other teachers in my building and in this school district. Today's LID provided me with a sense of community. Thank you!” Why It Matters Education is constantly evolving. By stepping away from the classroom for a day, our staff can return with fresh perspectives, updated strategies, and a renewed commitment to our students. When our teachers grow, our students thrive. Thank you for your continued partnership and for supporting our commitment to lifelong learning. We are #Proud2bMLSD! There's Still Time! We invite you to share your voice in shaping the future of our schools. The district’s Long-Range Facilities Plan ThoughtExchange survey is open to all community members through the end of the month. Your feedback is incredibly important as we plan for facility improvements, safety enhancements, accessibility, athletic spaces, and community use areas. This is an opportunity to help guide decisions that will impact students, families, staff, and the broader community for years to come. The survey is brief and anonymous, and only takes a few minutes to complete. Access the survey here: https://tejoin.com/scroll/447134480 Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts and support the future of Medical Lake School District. Happy Retirement Mrs. Starr! After more than 22 years of dedicated service to the Medical Lake School District, Principal Darlene Starr has announced her retirement at the conclusion of this school year. For the past 14 years, she has been the heart of Michael Anderson Elementary, leading with grace, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to our children. Darlene’s career has been defined by her belief of every student, every day. Her impact on the faculty, the families, and—most importantly—the students who passed through her halls will be felt for generations to come. Your Voice Matters We value your input and encourage you to participate in the selection process. Please take a moment to complete the survey linked below to share your thoughts on the essential qualities and experiences we should seek in our next principal. Click here for Resources Request for Mental Health Svc Did you know? Michael Anderson Elementary School, named in honor of astronaut Michael P. Anderson, is not the first elementary school located on Fairchild Air Force Base. From 1953 until January 2004, Blair Elementary School proudly served students on base. Blair Elementary was named after William E. Blair, a Fairchild-based Air Force pilot who made the ultimate sacrifice on September 30, 1949. After experiencing trouble mid-flight while transporting seven servicemen home from training, Captain Blair ordered everyone to parachute to safety. He remained at the controls, guiding the aircraft away from populated areas before it crashed, saving the lives of all on board. He was immediately honored as a hero. The legacy of Blair Elementary still lives on at Michael Anderson. In the front entryway, you’ll find a collection of memorabilia celebrating Blair’s history. In the cafeteria, colorful tiles line the walls; each one uniquely decorated by Blair students in late 2003, just before they moved into the new building. These meaningful touches serve as a lasting tribute to the generations of military-connected students, and to the spirit of service and sacrifice that connects our schools to our military community. Monday Minute 2.9.2026
Monday Minute February 9, 2026 Superintendent’s Update: Planning for Our District’s Future On January 21, 2026, our newly formed Community Facilities Task Force (CFTF) held its inaugural meeting. This committee is the cornerstone of our long-term capital planning, and I want to express my deepest gratitude to the members who have volunteered their time for this important work. We are incredibly fortunate to have a committee that represents a broad cross-section of our community, including dedicated parents, staff, and MLHS alumni, alongside local city officials and community leaders. Their diverse perspectives ensure that our plans will reflect the values and needs of the entire Medical Lake community. The committee is tasked with delivering a comprehensive facility recommendation to the School Board by June 23, 2026. Key Highlights from Our First Meeting: Establishing Our Charge: The committee will prioritize the most urgent facility needs and focus on creating modern teaching and learning environments that meet current standards for student success and safety. Facility Health Report: We reviewed the state-mandated "Study and Survey," which provides an objective "score" for our buildings. Celebrating Progress: We also looked at recent improvements made possible through your support of the Capital Levy, including roof replacements at the High School and new boiler systems at Michael Anderson Elementary. The Path Ahead: Over the next several months, the task force will analyze facility data, engage with stakeholders through surveys, and begin prioritizing specific project proposals for our 25-year facility plan. Our schools are the heart of this community, and this process is essential to ensure they remain safe, efficient, and educationally sound for years to come. We look forward to sharing more updates as the committee continues its work this spring. Happy or Not? Students Share Their Meal Opinions In the coming weeks, our elementary students will have the opportunity to share their thoughts on various school meal options using Happy or Not machines. These machines, which are on loan to us through a new partnership with NEWESD 101, are designed to engage students in a simple and fun way while increasing awareness around the school meal program. Student feedback will help inform future menu planning and ensure we continue offering meals that are both nutritious and enjoyable for our students! Monday Minute 01-12-2026
Monday Minute January 12, 2026 Welcome to the Monday Minute! This edition includes a mix of important reminders, upcoming opportunities, district updates, and celebrations from across our schools. Thank you for staying connected and for your continued partnership in supporting our students, staff, and community. Temperance and Good Citizenship Day – January 16 January 16 is recognized in Washington State as Temperance and Good Citizenship Day, a time to reflect on the life and work of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and the importance of civic responsibility. As part of Temperance and Good Citizenship Day, in 2018, the Washington Legislature created the Future Voter program to increase access to voter registration and recognize the importance of lifelong civic participation. Because of this work, 16-year-olds will automatically be registered to vote when they turn 18. Families who would like to explore this topic further can find information through OSPI by clicking here. In Observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, there will be No School on Monday, January 19th. Thank You for Your Interest in the Community Facilities Task Force! Thank you to everyone who took the time to apply for the Community Facilities Task Force (CFTF). We are grateful for the strong interest and the willingness of parents, staff, students, and community members to lend their voices to this important work. The CFTF will play a key role in shaping the future of Medical Lake School District by: Reviewing enrollment, facility condition, and capacity data Identifying immediate and long-term facility needs Gathering input from students, families, staff, and the broader community Exploring options to ensure safe, functional, and future-ready learning spaces Developing recommendations for a long-term facilities program plan, to be presented by June 23, 2026 This collaborative effort will help ensure our schools continue to support high-quality learning experiences for generations of students. Missed the application deadline but still interested in participating? Please contact the district office at 509-565-3100. Thank you for partnering with us as we plan for the future! Open Window for Hi-Cap Referrals January 5 - 23, 2026 Each year, school districts across Washington implement procedures for screening, referring, evaluating, and identifying students for highly capable (hi-cap) designation. Hi-Cap designation gives families and schools additional information about a student’s learning needs. MLSD's assessment program ensures students with qualifying screening scores are considered. We use multiple assessments and data points to help with this process. In addition, students may be referred by family members, teachers, support staff, community members, or themselves through our online referral form. The "Open Window" for hi-cap referrals is Monday, January 5 - Friday, January 23, 2026. Should you desire to refer a student for consideration, please complete and submit an online referral by Friday, January 23, 2026. Hard copies are also available at each school's main office.
